Beauty is hard work, but pays the bills

For Johanna Mhinga beauty is something that comes naturally and her natural beauty inspired her to open a business aimed at bringing beauty to the people

POLOKWANE – At 29 years old, she is well travelled and has several years of training in the beauty industry, along with a marketing communications degree.

She started her business in 2013 and specialises in everything that has to do with beauty from facials and massages to manicures and pedicures.

“Of all the services I offer, I like facials the most as they help to bring out the natural beauty in women. I cannot say there is anything I found particularly difficult to learn of the various beauty procedures I know and I enjoy doing it, no matter when or where,” she says.

Johanna says it is difficult in the beginning for someone who starts out in the beauty business as you have to get people to trust you. “I think people who would like to become beauticians need to understand that it is a lot of work and that you need to win people’s trust to start making a name for yourself in this industry.”

She says people who would like to have a career in the beauty industry need good people skills because they will need to work with people daily.

She says having prior experience and being good with your hands will be advantageous when it comes to learning the trade. People with these traits are able to learn faster and are able to start off on their own sooner than others.

She says she owes her success to people like her mother, who always advised her when she needed direction in her life and to her father for believing in her and seeing her make a success of her business long before she even started and to the people who trained her in the beauty industry.

“You must always recognise the people who were there when it all started and keep on thanking them and those who stay with you throughout the process. I want to thank everyone who stood by me on my journey and helped me make a success of myself,” Johanna says.
