‘We are all one family’

Local Afro jazz singer, Kgadi, says her music is all about promoting the spirit of botho (humanity)

POLOKWANE – Originally from Seleteng in Ga-Mphahlele, outside Polokwane, Kgadi says she believes in African norms, and still lives by the saying: “it takes the whole village to raise a child”.

Kgadi, whose real name is Refilwe Lekgau, says music has the power to unite people and that is why she addresses issues through her singing.

“When I was growing up, I used to play at my friends’ homes and get fed there, the entire community treated and supported each other like one big family.”

She says it is disappointing to see the general attitude these days is “everyone for themselves”, and people no longer show compassion for each other.

The hit singer of African Woman from the eight track album titled, Symbol of Botho says she encourages the spirit of giving and loving with the entire album.

African Woman is dedicated to the loving mothers who go the extra mile in taking care of their families and the community as a whole. It talks about a mother’s love and responsibilities towards her children so that they can grow up to be responsible adults with respect towards other people.”

The mother of one says she wants to help build communities through botho, regardless of age or skin colour, because we are all equal and we are all family. She says she has been singing from a very young age as she comes from a musical family.
