24 years in business and still going strong

One of the city's most experienced barbers, Sankie Moloutsi, has been cutting hair for 24 years and is still going strong

POLOKWANE – Although he has only one arm, he does not let his disability stand in the way of his passion and talent for cutting hair and making others feel good.

The father of two hails from Ga-Molepo and says he started cutting hair to make an income when he struggled to find employment and to care for his family.

“I learned several tricks over the years which enables me to make sure all my customers are completely satisfied after I finished cutting and styling their hair,” he says.

“My experience helps me to form a strong and lasting bond with my customers and they often open up to me and discuss their personal triumphs and hardships.”

Although he cuts the hair of both men and women, he says most of his customers are men. Sankie prefers to use electronic clippers to a razor when he has to shave a client’s head as a razor can cause skin irritation which causes discomfort to his clients.

He operates his business from a gazebo at the corner of Jorissen and Genl Joubert Streets in Polokwane and says his dream is to be able to open a salon where he will be able to cut hair regardless of the weather and help to create employment opportunities.

“With my current setup I am unable to open my business when it rains or when the weather is harsh. Being able to run my business from a building will make things a lot easier. It will make things more comfortable for my clients and might increase the amount of clients I have.

“This in turn will enable me to create jobs for others in the community,” he explains.
