Nazranah Cassim is a young lady to be taken note of. At the recent graduation ceremony of Boston City Campus and Business School she was named Top Student for the past academic year and also ended among the Top 10 students in Bookkeeping to Trial Balance course of the nationally accredited Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB).
Her message to other young women is that it is never too late to study and that it is a mistake to underestimate your abilities. “I just wanted to know more and be the best. It can even be fun along the way,” she reckoned and added that she was strongly supported by her mother.
“I was very surprised at the outcome of my first real attempt to seriously study and did not expect to end up as one of the top students. I matriculated at Taxila Secondary School with average results and did not regard myself as the academic type. I immediately started to work as a receptionist and administrative clerk at a panel beating business in the city and after I joined my mother’s business after four years, I realised that I can be a valuable asset for the business if I am computer literate, Cassim explained.
“I enrolled for a computer literacy course at a local computer training and education college and suddenly it became clear to me that I have the ability to study and make a success of it. My new position at the family business brought new challenges and opportunities and I was soon promoted to the position of Human Resources Officer. I am also involved in the day-to-day administration of our panel beating business and my mother, as owner of the business, is my biggest supporter,” she said.
According to Cassim, the bookkeeping course opened up a new world to her. “I have now formalised many of the things that I have already known from experience and can now operate with confidence and also streamline my workflow through the best practices that we have been exposed to in the course.”
Cassim lives with her mother and grandmother and they are a close family.
“I am independent and art is my hobby. I do not intend to make a business out of it but the paintings make nice presents,” she humbly said and added that her mother, as a successful businessperson, is her role model.
