Comedy’s next big treasure

On the comedic circuit, Morwana Paul Motshana, is known as a funny stand-up comedian who can make just about anyone laugh

POLOKWANE – Not only does he make people laugh, he is also the founder of the clothing brand, Tshaba ke Fete, and an entertainment company called Rwanza Entertainment.

He also holds a diesel mechanic diploma from Mopani South East campus.

The 27-year-old says he grew up shy and obedient, then as he grew up, he realised that he has the talent to make people laugh.

“I made jokes in class, the other kids laughed and that’s when I knew I had a talent for comedy.”

In 2011, he started his stand-up career with the assistance of Mashabela Galane, performing on stage with him and other comedians. He tells Review Bonus that his goal is to put the province and his home town on the map and lend a hand to others with talent.

People’s comments and compliments motivate me in my career. I grew up in the industry with other comedians as my brothers, they gave me good advice and I have learnt from them.

Motshana has shared the stage with the likes of Schoolboy, Kwetepane, Salesman, Rali Malatji, Nico Mamabolo, and Thabang ER.

He says the job comes with challenges, he meets people who love his work and others who hate it. “Some people meet you on the street and demand you tell a joke.” He says the only way to cope with this is to be smart and take it as it comes.

“I try my level best to accommodate everyone. I live with different people with different standards, all I can do is adjust to their standard. When I started with this career, I didn’t get much support from my family, they even gave up on me at one stage. I have been working hard since and now they know I am capable and they even give me jokes to tell on stage,” he says, laughing.

His advice to aspiring comedians is to start entertaining those around them. “It is great practice and gives you fresh ideas.”
