VIDEO: blind DJ Phobia spins the decks

Being completely blind doesn't mean this talented DJ cannot do what others who have their full sight can do

POLOKWANE –  Originally from Betlehem in the Free States, Bongani “DJ Phobia” Mbambo made his debut in the entertainment industry in 2005 with the help of DJ Christos and Black Coffee.

“DJ Christos and Black Coffee played a crucial role in my career, they taught me everything I needed to make it as a DJ. I usually play hit tracks and sign-alongs so I can hear the crowd’s response. If the response is great I continue playing songs they know and love,” says Mbambo.

He told Review Bonus he knows which music to play and select by placing his CDs in a specific order, which he memorises, making his task easier.

I don’t really encounter problems while playing – my fans love my music and they often come up to shake my hand or chat with me after I finish playing, and this means a lot to me.

He says being a success in the music industry is all about not giving up and working hard to reach your dreams.

“It keeps me going because people love what I’m doing. I started out playing music from vinyl records which was easier as most vinyls had two to three tracks on them which made it easier to plan my playlist, but I’m managing to keep up with the times,” he says.

The father of one says his family is very supportive of his DJ career.

“My son, who is only three years old, wanted me to teach him how to DJ,” he laughs. “My son has the same problem I had when I was young. He only has vision in one eye and I motivate him by showing him he can still be a success even if he does not have vision. I am busy working on my single, Come Back to Me, which is set to be released in winter and features Lady Kenya as a vocalist.

DJ Phobia says he hopes to one day be recognised internationally for his DJ talent.

“I am fighting for that dream now, nothing will stop me and nothing will hold me back.”
