Students of Stanford Lake College (SLC) distinguished themselves as real achievers after they emerged as top performers from the Junior Afrikaans First Language Olympiad in which they participated recently.
The Olympiad is written nationally and 4 333 students took part in this prestigious annual event that is hosted by the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV).
Christian Schmidt, a Grade 9 pupil, obtained 95%, putting him second in South Africa and in the first place in Limpopo. Malike Naude (89%) was third in Limpopo, Anya Robinson (88%) fourth and Elané Maritz (87%) fifth. Twelve of SLC’s students received placing in the Top 20 in the province.
The objective of the Olympiad is to enhance the Afrikaans culture and language and according to Rona McGaffin, Marketer of SLC, the school has delivered excellent results over the past few years, both provincially and nationally.
“In 2013, Conrad Schmidt, then in Grade 10, was the Limpopo winner in the senior Olympiad. In 2014 he wrote the exam again and came fifth overall in South Africa and first in Limpopo.
For that he received several prizes from the ATKV. In the 2014 Olympiad, Anja Robinson was placed first in Limpopo in the junior section. She was then in Grade 8,” said McGaffin.
