1. Mapungubwe

A World Heritage Site in the incredible Limpopo River valley, Mapungubwe was South Africa’s first city of gold that flourished in the 12th century. more

 

2. Thulamela

Situated in the Northern Kruger National Park, Thulamela is a hillside of stone ruins telling the story of an ancient culture that settled here in the 15th century. more

 

3. Makapans Valley

Situated near Mokopane, Makapans Valley is the sister site to the Cradle of Humankind, and was where Raymond Dart discovered an Australopithecus fossil in 1936. more

 

4. Masorini Museum

The Masorini Museum is located inside Phalaborwa Gate (Kruger National Park). A Late Iron Age archaeological site showing smelting furnaces, homesteads and historic implements.

 

5. Dzata Ruins and Museum of the Drum

High in the mountains of the Soutpansberg, these stone ruins date back to the days of the Vha-Vhenda Kings (1400 AD).

 

6. Leydsdorp Hotel

An eccentric historic hotel in a ghost town (current population 25) that celebrates the wilder side of the gold rush days. more

 

7. Strijdom House & Waterberg Museum

Found in Modimolle, Strijdom House & Waterberg Museum offer a comprehensive reflection of the life and times of the South African War (Anglo-Boer War) in the Waterberg area (where fighting was particularly fierce).

 

8. The Tallest Bluegum Tree

Head off to Woodbush Forest in Magoebaskloof where you will find the tallest planted bluegum tree in the country. It’s nearly 90 metres and was planted in 1905!

 

9. Arend Dieperink Museum

Situated in Mokopane, the Arend Dieperink Museum is an excellent museum on local history particularly the Voortrekkers and their exploits. more

 

10. Old Baobab Tree, Modjadji

The Old Baobab Tree at Modjadji is an absolute must-see. The enormous baobab is around 4 000 years old and you can climb inside – it’s big enough for a crowd!
