Time for W’burg Easter Sports Festival

The annual Westenburg Easter Sports Festival is taking place this weekend and residents say they cannot wait.

POLOKWANE – The annual Westenburg Easter Sports Festival is taking place this weekend and residents say they cannot wait.

The festival is organised by the Westenburg Rugby Club and will be held at the Westenburg sports grounds. The festival takes place over three days, starting Friday morning until Sunday evening.

There is a list of events that will take place over the weekend, which include: soccer, netball, a 5 km marathon, golf, dominoes, pool-, potjiekos-, and dance competitions, athletics for all age categories, and a last man standing challenge.

Kayla Andreas and her sister Greshime said the festival brings the community to life.

“Young and old gather at the sports grounds to enjoy the weekend. There are different sporting codes played at the festival, entertainment for the children and there are different food stalls selling a variety of meals,” the Andreas sisters said.

Joshua Vorster agreed with the girls and said the Westenburg Easter Sports Festival is the one time that the community comes together and enjoy different sport codes.

“Its just an amazing family atmosphere at the festival. Children go on train rides, the adults watch soccer, others netball and some participate in the dominoes, potjiekos- and pool competitions. We are just having a good time as a united community,” Joshua said.

Five-year-old Zuané April said she could not wait for the festival to start, because she gets to meet new friends and go on a train ride.

“It is a lot of fun at the Westenburg Easter Sports Festival. There are a lot of children and we all play together. My mother also buys me a lot of food like popcorn, chips and sweets and cooldrink,” Zuané said.

Makupa Letsoalo said the festival gives the youth something to do over the Easter weekend.

“In Westenburg there aren’t really any activities to keep the youth busy, but we always look forward to the Westenburg Easter Sports Festival because we get to participate in different sports and be social with other young people,” Makupa said.

Kadré Hartlief added that the Westenburg Easter Sports Festival also helps small business owners to promote their businesses.

“We get to sell our goods at the festival and this gives us the opportunity to network and get clients, The Westenburg Easter Sports Festival is a positive initiative that builds our community and it should actually be held not just during Easter time, but more often in order to keep our youth busy and out of the streets,” Kadré said.
