Fragrant flowers at fest

The annual flower festival at Savannah Mall has again confirmed that a thing of beauty is indeed a joy forever.

POLOKWANE – The annual flower festival at Savannah Mall has again confirmed that a thing of beauty is indeed a joy forever.

Although fewer entries were received than usual due to a variety of reasons, the Helpmekaar Blommeklub in Polokwane’s De-Mara Bezuidenhout said the flower festival drew outstanding flower arrangements among the 30 entrants.

People from Polokwane, Tzaneen, Louis Trichardt, Haenertsburg and Mokopane entered the festival.

The themes of the categories were mostly based on the coming Easter period, and participants entered in categories aptly named The Cross, Curtain Call, The Last Passover, Traditional Altar Design and Celebrate a Festival. Other categories included Go for Glass, Petite Magic and My Garden in Grandpa’s Beer Box.

“We also asked some schools to enter, but only learners from Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos (Oosskool) entered. The four entries by learners of Oosskool in the category My Tuin in Oupa se Vierboks (my garden in grandpa’s beer box) drew a lot of oohs and aahs and were interesting and well thought through in design,” Bezuidenhout says.

“Most entrants however were women, and it seems children were not that interested in entering. Fewer beginners entered this time around.”

For the first time in the history of the festival a section was opened for petite flower arrangements. “In the Petite Magic category the arrangements may not be smaller than 10cm and not bigger than 25cm,” Bezuidenhout says. “Scale and composition are very important in this category.”

Entrants arranged their flowers last Wednesday for the judging on last Thursday night. The prize-giving ceremony took place last Friday morning.

Savannah Mall marketing manager, Karen Botha, thanked all the sponsors including Debbie Mouton Jewellers, Pick n Pay, PNA, R Baker Optometrists, Milady’s, Mugg and Bean, Falcon Rock Spur and Ocean Basket for their generous sponsorship of the event.
