Sporting highlights for 2014

Desiree Earle, manager of the Pro Shop at the Polokwane Golf Club was the overall winner and the winner of the A-division in this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge National Final.

The 43-year-old Earle claimed both titles with her 72 points over 36 holes, scoring 38 points at the Lost City Golf Club and then 34 points at the Gary Player Country to achieve this feat.

 

It’s all Stormers

Spectators were treated to a thrilling encounter when the DHL Stormers faced the Vodacom Bulls in a Super Rugby warm-up match in the city in January.

The DHL Stormers beat the Vodacom Bulls 26-19.

 

Brian Baragwanath

Team Rhide South Africa’s off-road quad racer, Brian Baragwanath, has become the first quad bike rider in the past decade to win all rounds of a modern South African national off-road series.

He also qualified to participate in the gruelling Dakar Challenge in 2015.

Team Rhide SA was formed at the beginning of the season to tackle the 2015 Dakar Rally and to compete in this South American event in January to promote awareness on rhino

poaching.

 

Volleyball

Some of the country’s top beach volleyball stars came out to play in the city in the Flying Fish Beach Volleyball Series.

The tournament delivered top quality action, especially the semi-final and final play-offs.

 

KG Montjane

Polokwane’s Kgothatso Montjane kept her winning shape by ranking ninth worldwide and number one in South Africa.
