M-NET Idols 2013 winner, Khaya Mthethwa recently released his second album, The Uprising.

Khaya was in the city last week to promote the album in partnership with Boxer Superstores.

He described the 14-track album as a mix of traditional, contemporary, soulful and classical gospel, which Khaya said was meant to bring people closer to God and to heal them spiritually.

He said most of the songs on the album were written about 15 years ago, long before he even thought of becoming a musician.

Asked why he chose to go into gospel music, Khaya said he grew up in the church, and gospel music was always the first choice.

“I wrote 90% of my songs, which proves that I am not just a singer, but an artist who believes that music should not always be for entertainment, but to educate.

“My songs are based on real life experiences,” he said.

Tracks on the album include How do You Love, Akhe’ofana Nawe, Coming Out, Ushilo Wena, Makwenzeke and Praise Your Name.

Khaya said his partnership with Boxer Superstores would benefit the fans.

“We are running a competition where fans can win an all-expenses paid trip to see the finals of the 2014 M-Net Idols. All people have to do is buy a copy of my album at any Boxer Superstores, which comes with a free 2kg Ariel washing powder,” he said.

He said he planned to release a DVD next year, which would also feature Limpopo.
