RITSHIDZE Alongwe (19) of Vuwani near Elim in the Vhembe district is one of this year’s Miss Commonwealth South Africa finalists.

The crowning ceremony will take place at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on August 29.

This second year nursing student at the University of Pretoria says she entered the competition in March and had to go for an interview before she found out that she was one of the 20 finalists.

“They have to make sure that you are not just a pretty face. Miss Commonwealth South Africa must be an ambassador for the country,” she said.

She said the butterflies already started to flutter in her stomach.

“I am very excited and a little scared. I never thought I would be a finalist. I entered the pageant because I like a challenge and I want to become a strong woman.”

She described herself as talkative, friendly and inquisitive.

“Most importantly, I love working with people. I believe that you learn something from every person you meet and that learning never stops,” she explained.

She said the Miss Commonwealth pageant wanted an ambassador for change; a woman who empowered others and brought change to her community.

“Deep in my heart I feel that I am the person they want. I look forward to the finals and I hope and pray that I will win.
