Public transport to be under the spotlight

POLOKWANE – With the integrated rapid public transport system (IRPTS) comprising various modes of transport including taxis, buses and non-motorised transport services, being planned for the city, public participation sessions will be held at various venues over the next month.

The IRPTS is in line with the national land transport strategic framework developed by the national department of transport.

Polokwane mayor, Freddy Greaver said the IRPTS currently being planned for Polokwane was intended to transform the public transport sector through the provision of a high quality and affordable transport system, whilst reducing the overall journey times for public transport users.

“As part of its mandate, the municipality is embarking on a public transport participation process to inform and engage all stakeholders including, but not limited to, the current public transport operators, ward councillors, committees, business owners through the Polokwane Chamber of Business, commuter, and residents,” he explained.

The public participation meetings will be held at six different venues across Polokwane. Tomorrow (Wednesday) public participation will be held at Jack Botes Hall. Further public participation sessions are scheduled to take place in February 9 at the Moletjie Moshate Hall, February 11 at Ngoako Ramathlodi Sports Complece in Seshego, February 16 at Marobala Community hall in Sebayeng/Dikgale, February 22 at Dihlopanong in the Molepo/Chuene/Maja area, and on February 23 at the Mankweng Community Hall.

These sessions will take place from 18:00 to 20:00, except for those taking place over weekends, the times for which will still be made public, according to Greaver.
