SLC’s hot winter holidays

The learners of Stanford Lake College had a very busy few days during the school winter vacation.

POLOKWANE – The learners of Stanford Lake College had a very busy few days during the school winter vacation.

Matthew Wilkinson, a gr. 9 learner at Stanford Lake College, had the experience of a lifetime after he participated in the South African mountain bike (MTB) championships in Stellenbosch, Coetzenburg Sports Precinct recently.

Rona McGaffin, Stanford Lake College marketer, said the course was very demanding and extremely technical and Wilkinson competed against some of the best riders in the country.

“He finished in position 32 in the youth category. Being able to participate and feel the atmosphere will stay with him for a while,” said McGaffin. She added that the race was full of challenges, but Wilkinson did his best and the college is happy with the results. She further said the school will make a point of it that Wilkinson does not lose his pace.

The Stanford Lake College cricket teams also participated in the Merensky Week during the school holidays. The school played five games, managed to win two and pushed another two games right to the end.

“We won the toss against Montana and put them into bat. The bowlers built pressure from the word go, not giving anything away. Matthew Maritz and Justyn Trueman bowled exceptionally well,” said Rona McGaffin.

Montana did not recover from Stanford Lake College’s good start and they were bowled out for 125.

Adam McGaffin was the best of the bowlers, picking up six wickets. Stanford Lake College won the game by four wickets with Benno Prinsloo scoring 30 not out. On the fourth day Stanford Lake played against Hoërskool Zwartkop from Pretoria. Zwartkop batted first, scoring 228 in their 50 overs.

Stanford Lake College got off to a good start and reached 60 without loss. This set up a good platform for the middle order to come in. Conrad Schmidt and Benno Prinsloo both scored half centuries. Stanford Lake passed the score of Zwartkop with only three wickets down in the 33rd over.
