POLOKWANE – Anna Maponya from the University of Limpopo Athletics Club secured a win and a gold medal in the 50+ age category during the 2024 Athletics South Africa (ASA) Cross-Country Championships held in Cape Town last month.
Maponya, hailing from Mankweng, completed the 4km race in an impressive 15 minutes and 12 seconds, continuing her remarkable streak of achievements in athletics.
At 53, Maponya has only been in professional athletics for less than a decade, yet she continues to defy age-related expectations.
She trains at the University of Limpopo’s state-of-the-art sports facilities, which she credits for supporting her athletic growth and community development efforts.
“Commitment to improving the community has allowed me to push my own boundaries and inspire other women my age who may think sport is only for the young,” she shared.
In June this year, Maponya also claimed a Bill Rowan medal after finishing first in the 50+ women’s category at the Comrades Marathon.
Reflecting on her latest victory, she said, “I’m proud to have added another gold to my collection. As I continue to raise the university’s flag, I remain grateful for the training opportunities they provide.”
Ludwick Mamabolo, University of Limpopo athletics coach and a celebrated Comrades Marathon winner, praised Maponya’s dedication and hinted at her potential to represent South Africa internationally.
“Anna may very well be selected to compete on the international stage next year, depending on her age category. Her next challenge is the Masingita race in Giyani, and I am confident she will excel once again,” Mamabolo remarked.
