Limpopo cyclists conquer 140km challenge

Over 100 cyclists from various clubs converged on Mokopane for the gruelling 100-140km annual cycle challenge.

MOKOPANE – Cyclists from the Boni Riders, along with participants from Mookgophong, Bela-Bela, Polokwane Joyride, Bohlabatsatsi cyclists, Zebediela (ZBRs), and local enthusiasts embarked on a challenging route from Mokopane to Zebediela, Roedtan and back to Mokopane recently.

Despite the warm, sunny weather, riders persevered through the 100 to 140km trek.

Sbusiso Banda of the Boni Riders praised the motorists along the route for their respect and understanding of the cyclists, noting that they gave them enough space to pass and read their hand signals. Banda stressed the importance of awareness in villages and towns where commuters and motorists often overlook the presence of cyclists.

“Professional or ordinary cyclists also have the right to use the road and we ask for respect,” he said.

The event, which takes place annually, aims to grow the cycling community and promote a healthy, active lifestyle.

“Cycling is not just a means of transport but also a sport,” Banda explained.

“The gathering is inclusive, welcoming cyclists of all ages and abilities, including disabled participants.

Originally scheduled for July, the event was postponed to September due to challenges. Fortunately, the day saw only one minor accident involving two cyclists, with no serious injuries.

Kgaogelo Makinta, the secretary general of the Boni Riders, extended an invitation to the community to join next year’s event, expressing hope for increased attendance.

The Boni Riders also expressed their gratitude to Energy FM and PV Lifestyle for their support with marketing, food, and medals.

“The cyclists made new friends, and the cycling community will undoubtedly reach new heights,” concluded Makinta.
