Kwena (13) makes impressive strides in fencing

A member of the Limpopo Fencing Association, Kwena explored various sporting codes before finding his true passion in fencing, where he feels completely at home.

POLOKWANE – At only 13 years old, Kwena Mohale is making impressive strides in the world of fencing, establishing himself as a rising star in the sport.

A member of the Limpopo Fencing Association, Kwena explored various sporting codes before finding his true passion in fencing, where he feels completely at home.

His fencing journey started last December at a holiday training camp hosted by the Limpopo Fencing Association, and he has been hooked ever since. In his first provincial competition in January, he won a bronze medal in the u/13 epee category. His talent continued to shine as he added to his provincial medal tally, securing another bronze in the u/15 epee and a silver in the u/13 epee.

In August, Kwena took his skills to the junior nationals in Cape Town, where he earned a silver medal in the u/13 epee category.

Coach Joseph Maluleke praised Kwena’s achievement, saying it was a significant national medal, as he competed against the best in his age group. “I am excited to see where Kwena’s talent will take him as he continues to develop in fencing. With his love for the sport and dedication to training, the possibilities are endless for him,” he said.

Kwena himself describes fencing as the perfect sport and shows this through his dedication to training. “I am very excited about fencing and the potential of making it to the national team in a few years,” he said.

Renuka Ramroop, the chairperson of the Limpopo Fencing Association, highlighted Kwena’s passion for the sport and his commitment to training. “He is a hard worker and eager to learn more about fencing and win more championships. He has all the makings of a future champion,” she stated.
