12-year-old Seshego karate prodigy

Bareng Matlabo, a 12-year-old karate enthusiast, is making waves at Seshego's Oyama School of Karate with his dedication and perseverance.

POLOKWANE – At just 12 years old, Bareng Matlabo, known affectionately as Makwena in the dojo, has been training at Oyama School of Karate in Seshego since 2020.

He joined the dojo shortly after lockdown restrictions were relaxed, brimming with excitement and dreams of becoming the next Bruce Lee.

Training has always been a thrilling experience for Bareng, as it allows him to train alongside fellow karatekas under the guidance of his favourite sensei, Thomas Sekhale.

Despite the challenges, Bareng and his peers have developed not only physical strength but also confidence, all aspiring to be the best karatekas they can be.

Bareng’s journey from a novice to his current skill level has been transformative. He has grown in discipline, social skills, and, most importantly, his love for karate.

His attendance is exemplary, with only a few absences due to illness or family commitments. A model student, he consistently ranks first in class and is always punctual.

His supportive parents have nurtured his passion, and the positive changes in him are evident both at home and in his schoolwork.

While many young people are drawn to games and smartphones, sport remains Bareng’s top priority. He also enjoys playing soccer with his classmate, sempai Cuba Makgoka.

Their bond is evident not only in their friendly sparring sessions but also in their post-match camaraderie, where they share a hug to celebrate the spirit of competition.

“Bareng is a motivated student in class,” says sempai Peter Malatji. “He approaches every challenge with pride and determination, embodying the spirit of perseverance.”

Bareng is currently preparing for an important milestone – his grading for second kyu on October 26. As one of the senior students, he often leads classes, demonstrating his growing leadership skills under the supervision of Sekhale and sempai Malatji.

Both instructors are excited to see the energy Bareng will bring on grading day, reflecting the same enthusiasm he shows during regular training.

“His character in class is such that our club should represent well even outside the dojo,” commented one instructor. “We are proud of the journey he has undertaken with us and look forward to his goal of achieving a black belt.”

Bareng Matlabo’s dedication and passion for karate promise a bright future, both within the dojo and beyond.
