POLOKWANE – Jonathan Mathete, a young fencer from the Limpopo Fencing Association, is making waves in the fencing world as he strives to build a promising career in the sport.
Jonathan’s fencing journey began in 2022 when his school joined the E tla Naso fencing project.
His talent was immediately evident, as he impressed at provincial competitions.
In his first national competition, held in Polokwane, Jonathan advanced to the quarter-finals.
Limited funding, however, prevented him from competing in further national events, hindering his national ranking improvement.
With support from the Department of Sport, and the Limpopo Sport Confederation, Jonathan was able to join the Limpopo team at the national championships in Cape Town in August. There, he reached the semi-finals, ultimately securing a bronze medal after losing to the eventual gold medallist.
“This is my first national medal and a testament to the talent fostered by the E tla Naso project. I’m happy and will continue working hard. I dream of representing my country in the Olympics and other international competitions,” Jonathan said.
Ephraim Masekoameng, Jonathan’s mentor, expressed pride in his achievement.
“Jonathan has put Ditlalemeso School on the map with this medal,” he said.
The E tla Naso project was launched by Renuka Ramroop, chairperson of the Limpopo Fencing Association, with the aim of bringing fencing to communities that previously lacked access to the sport.
Her motto, ‘development through sport’, has driven her efforts to raise funds so that the 30 fencers from Mankweng and nearby villages can pursue their passion.
“This project is making a significant impact not only on the fencers but also on the national fencing landscape,” said Ramroop.
“Our next goal is to have fencers from the project make the national team by 2025. This can only happen if they attend three national competitions and secure a top-four national ranking. With consistent training and competition experience, we believe we can achieve this.”
Limpopo Fencing Association coach Joseph Maluleke, added that the fencers have performed admirably against the best in the country.
“Their success reflects positively on the club and the province,” he said.
As Jonathan moves up to the u/20 and senior categories, the fencing community eagerly anticipates his continued development and success.
