MOKOPANE – Archers from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia gathered in Walvis Bay, Namibia, from August 22-24 for the Africa Genesis Archery Federation tournament.
This year’s event saw competitors in three categories: Adult Archery Group (AAG), juniors, and a development group, with participants competing in two divisions – bullseye and 3D.
Banie van Tonder, founder, owner, and coach of Arundo Archery Club in Mokopane, represented South Africa as a AAG archer and served as the team manager for the national development team.
Van Tonder excelled in the bullseye division, securing third place with impressive scores of 291, 287, and 283 out of 300, totalling 861 out of 900.
The South African AAG team emerged as overall winners, with the junior team also claiming victory in their category. The South African development team finished second overall.
“South Africa’s performance was outstanding, and we were thrilled to be named the overall tournament winners,” Van Tonder said.
Reflecting on the experience, Van Tonder expressed his excitement about reconnecting with archers from other countries.
“It was a wonderfully exciting time in Walvis Bay. Next on our schedule is the inter-provincial tournament hosted by AGA Northern Cape in Kimberley on September 25, followed by the national inter-school and AAG championship from September 26-28.”
