Polokwane Parkrun celebrates 401st run in colour

The 401st Parkrun saw runners and walkers in colourful tutus to commemorate the occasion in festive flair.

POLOKWANE – Polokwane Parkrun marked a significant milestone with its 401st run on Saturday morning.

The event saw runners and walkers donning colourful tutus to commemorate the occasion.

Sandra Eloff, the run director on Saturday explained that although the 400th run anniversary was last week, celebrations were postponed as many senior members were unavailable.

This past Saturday not only celebrated the 401st run but also honoured timekeeper Mark Markgraaff on his 78th birthday.

“We also want to acknowledge Johan van Graan, one of our most dedicated park walkers who has completed 389 park walks and is working towards his 100th Parkrun nationally, as well as Coen Engelbrecht, who is nearing his 300th Parkrun,” Eloff said.

Van Graan shared his lifelong passion for running, expressing his commitment to continuing Parkruns as long as he is able to do so.

Engelbrecht mentioned his enjoyment of the Parkrun for its productivity and his volunteer efforts in cleaning the park every Saturday morning before the participants arrive.

The event also featured an award for the best tutu, adding to the festive spirit. Eloff noted that they are striving to attract participants back to Parkrun post-Covid-19, as many were lost during the pandemic.

“It’s good exercise, and you can pace yourself according to your ability. It’s fun and it’s free,” she added.

Join the Polokwane Parkrun every Saturday opposite Tom Naudé Technical High School at 07:00 (October-March) and 08:00 (April- September).
