Limpopo fencers show off at local epee competition

The Limpopo Fencing Association under the leadership of Renuka Ramroop established the University of Limpopo Fencing Club in 2021.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Fencing Association hosted a club epee ranking competition for the University of Limpopo Fencing Club on May 5.

The competition saw 18 fencers who have been working hard at training with coach Phetho Mashiane, fence for their ranking placements on the list.

Even though some fencers only joined the club at the beginning of the year, their fencing skills are of a very high standard.

Mashiane is currently working his magic with both experienced and new fencers as he develops their fencing potential.

The University of Limpopo is the first historically black university to have a fencing club and since 2021, fencers from the club have been participating in provincial and national competitions.

They have made their mark on the fencing community provincially and nationally, changing the demographics of people participating in this elegant Olympic sport.

The Limpopo Fencing Association under the leadership of Renuka Ramroop established the University of Limpopo Fencing Club in 2021 and continues to support the club in its growth and development.

According to Mashiane, the club has the potential to become a key player in the growth and development of the sport in the province.

“Students love the sport and show their dedication with their diligence to their training schedule. I am happy with their progress and I enjoy seeing the fencers enjoying the sport.”

Ramroop says fencing is a wonderful sport as it develops fitness while developing physical and mental agility.

“Often dubbed as ‘physical chess’, fencing demands quick thinking and action on the piste as fencers vie to outsmart their opponents to score their points. Fencing has been part of the modern Olympic games since its inception and continues to be one of the most enjoyed codes at the Olympics. The Paris Olympics will also feature a South African fencer from Gauteng which will help raise the profile of fencing in South Africa. Limpopo hopes to field its very own fencer at the Olympics in the near future.”
