UL happy to have hosted national athletics event

UL's acting senior publications officer Johannes Selepe said being accessible and boasting state-of-the-art sporting facilities became the focal point during the event.

POLOKWANE – The University of Limpopo (UL) is happy to have hosted the South African Primary Schools Athletics championship at the Oscar Mpetha Stadium from March 25 and 26.

UL’s acting senior publications officer Johannes Selepe said being accessible and boasting state-of-the-art sporting facilities became the focal point during the event.

The university partnered with the Limpopo Department of Education and South African Schools Athletics.

“Central to the success of the championships were the University s state-of-the-art sporting facilities, boasting well-maintained tracks and expansive fields. These provided the ideal backdrop for athletes to exhibit their talents, leaving a lasting impression on participants and spectators alike.”

The Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya expressed gratitude to UL.

“On behalf of the Limpopo Province, we want to say we are happy to have this partnership where when we host we can use their facilities. The University is always available when we need its facilities and we are glad that through their meticulous arrangement, the tournament was a success.”

Sonica Fritz, acting director for sport and recreation at the university, highlighted that the university is currently the only facility in the province meeting the standard required for a national event such as SASA’s championship.

“The decision to bring the event to the institution came after the field and equipment was put to the test and passed. By hosting events of national significance like the National Primary Schools Track and Field Championships, the university reaffirms its dedication to nurturing talent, promoting inclusivity, and fostering a culture of sportsmanship among the youth in the country.”
