‘Bus driver’ honours for BK Matewe at Cape Town marathon

BK Matewe said he was pleasantly surprised by the request and will be the only 'bus driver' from Limpopo who will be part of the race.

POLOKWANE – BK Matewe of Bus with BK will be motivating runners at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon set to take place on October 15.

Matewe is the only ‘bus driver’ from Limpopo who will be part of the race.

He explained that he was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from the organisers who enquired if he would join this year’s race as ‘bus driver’.

“For a moment there I thought it was a prank,” he said, and it was only after receiving official communication that he believed the call was real.

The organisers had been following his races and were impressed by the flavour he added with his peculiar outfits.

He said he was overwhelmed by the invitation as the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is a candidate to be one of the World Marathon Majors, with the current six majors being the Boston, Berlin, Tokyo, London, New York, and Chicago marathons.

“That in itself is massive and I am grateful to have been considered. I owe a lot of gratitude to the likes of Rocky Mojela and Lucas Seleka, the celebrated Comrades Marathon ‘bus drivers’ from whom I have learnt a lot. So, I guess anything to put our province on the map, goes a long way in promoting us,” he said.

The Polokwane Athletic Club member also thanked the runners he usually trains and runs races with, for the positive feedback they have given him, as well as to his employer, Energy FM, for the support.

Matewe indicated that preparations are currently underway and that he is cautious about what he eats and drinks to avoid upsetting his system. “The outfit has been nicely folded and packed away, awaiting race day. The little bit I can share about the outfit is that it is colourful. As for the rest, you will see it on TV,” he concluded.
