Mama Rocks boxing tourney to be hosted at Meropa

The tournament forms part of Boxing South Africa's Rise of Women in Boxing Series Programme which aims to unearth new talent and give exposure to female boxers and develop, foster growth and empowerment within the sport.

POLOKWANE – Local female boxers in the country will have an opportunity to test their skills against top boxers from SADC countries at the Mama Rocks Women in Boxing tournament scheduled at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on September 29.

The tournament forms part of Boxing South Africa’s Rise of Women in Boxing Series Programme which aims to unearth new talent and give exposure to female boxers and develop, foster growth and empowerment within the sport.

Modipadi Linah Kgasago, boxing promoter and owner of Mama Rocks Promotions said the event will be spearheaded by women.

“We want to increase the number of women in the sport and spark an interest. All key segments on the day will be headed by women. There will be female referees, judges and ring announcers. We invite everybody to come and support the tournament.”

The main bout will see South African champion Sharadine Fortein taking on Alice Mbewa from Zambia in an eight-round international bantamweight contest.

The junior featherweight six-round bout will be between Lufuno Mutshayi representing South Africa and Adidya Mimu from Malawi.

Bernice Fereira representing South Africa will face Cecilia Pitisani from Zimbabwe in a six-round lightweight bout while the six-round super middleweight bout will be contested by Caroline Rabali and Wendy Gcado, all from South Africa.The cruiserweight six-round battle will be between Lilian Molala and Ngorothe Mugari.

Noxolo Mkhasibe and Emily Kubwalo from Zimbabwe will fight for the middleweight six-round title.

Gudani Mudau from Venda and Ntobeko Thusi from KwaZulu-Natal will close the show in a featherweight four-round contest.
