Polokwane netball star excels in Caribbean

Kubura Abubakar is also part of the Limpopo u/18 netball team that ended eighth at the National Telkom Netball championship held in Cape Town.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Netball Association said they are proud of their star netball player, Kubura Abubakar who won a silver with Netball South Africa’s junior team at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago recently.

Kubura was the only player from the association to be drafted in the national team.

The 17-year-old played a key role in the country’s victories against Scotland, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Botswana and England.

Rose Mamabolo, events netball coordinator at Limpopo Netball Association, described Kubura as a role model to her peers and up- and-coming netball players in the province.

β€œWe discovered her when she was 11 years old. She was shy, but had an immense love for netball. She is humble, she loves everybody and she has incredible energy. She is a hard worker and is always the first to arrive at training.”

Mamabolo said Kubura will be included in the Limpopo Baobabs team that will campaign in the Telkom Knockout League next season.

Besides netball, Kubura also excels in athletics having won gold medal in the triple jump South Africa School Athletics in Germiston in Gauteng in March.

She was also part of the Limpopo u/18 netball team that ended eight at the National Telkom Netball championship held in Cape Town from July 11-14.

β€œIt was my first time traveling to a South American country and I enjoyed playing netball with top young players in the world. It was my third national cap and I made the best of it. I came back with a silver medal. I will continue working hard because I want to stay in the national team,” she told Polokwane Observer.
