Rufus Photo off to World marathon in India

Fifth place Comrades Winner Rufus Photo will fly the South African flag high at the 50km World Championship Marathon.

POLOKWANE – This year’s fifth place winner at the Comrades Marathon, Rufus Photo will represent South Africa at the 50km World Championship Marathon scheduled for India on November 5.

Photo was selected for the team after his exploits at the Comrades Marathon in June.

It will be the second time he represents the country on the international stage, after helping the South African Athletics team to win gold at the 100km marathon in Spain in 2016.

“I feel honoured to have been chosen for the South African team. I am 43 years old and it is very seldom for athletes to be considered for any national berth at my age. I am proud of myself and I want to do my best to help the team to win gold.”

As part of his preparation, Photo said he will be based in Dullstroom in Mpumalanga.

“I will be there for six weeks to prepare for the championship. I have chosen the area because of its altitude, and I will be working on my speed. Unlike the Comrades, this event does not require a lot of mileage.”

Photo is currently looking for sponsorships, and invites sponsors of any kind to come on board.

After the event, Photo said he will compete in the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town next year to prepare for the 2024 Comrades Marathon.

“I will start with my Comrades preparations sooner than always. It is better to prepare early than late.”
