Female cricketer Kushi Mistry has won multiple awards including that of u/18 female cricketer of the year in 2018 and says Limpopo Impala Cricket is looking brighter than ever.

POLOKWANE- Limpopo Impala senior women cricketer, Kushi Mistry says she is happy with the growth of the sport among women in the province.

Mistry, who has won multiple awards including that of u/18 female cricketer of the year in 2018, says she is happy to see aspiring women cricketers from various parts in the province in the Limpopo team. “The standard of cricket is not where it is supposed to be yet, but it is growing exponentially and the future of Limpopo Impala Cricket is looking brighter than ever. Things are starting to change rapidly and more opportunities are available.

“We have cricketers from rural areas who are doing well in the team. It is important to have a diverse team because everyone brings something different to the field of play.”

She says growing up she never imagined playing for a semi-professional cricket outfit.

“I have always loved watching cricket as my parents love the sport. I developed a passion for cricket in Gr 9 when I was selected for the u/19 provincial team for the first time. As a woman, it was already difficult to compete in a male dominated sport. It was intimidating too as I was still learning the basics.”

She said her team mates were, however very supportive.

“They played a big role in my development as a player, and this has developed me as a cricketer.”

She says she still harbours aspirations of playing for the national side, and even other cricket franchises around the world.

“I have represented South Africa in the emerging squad as well as the Women’s Super League. I need more national call-ups. I want to be a top female cricketer, as cricket is my home and my teammates are my second family.”

She said the sport brings players from different cultures and backgrounds together.

“It is a sport where you very often fail more than succeed, but where you definitely learn the most. It teaches you unity and teamwork and allows players to travel the world and give hope to others.”
