Baobabs clinch Telkom League 2 championship title

The Baobabs were exceptional in the round-robin stages, winning 13 out of the 14 games before clinching their maiden title since their inception.

POLOKWANE- The Limpopo Baobabs were crowned the champions of the Telkom Netball League Division 2 after thrashing Western Cape Tornados 65-40 in the finals, played at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on June 30.

This is the first title for the Limpopo Baobabs since their inception decades ago.

Nthabiseng Mothutsi, captain of the team said it a huge honour to finally clinch a title.

“No one has ever given us a chance in the tournament. Most people have been looking down on us as a province and a team. We have a team made up of hungry girls who just want to win every match and they were able to achieve that.We have prepared well, we trained hard and everyday like professionals. We analysed all the matches and will do anything to defend our title next year.”

She said the journey to their maiden title started in Seshego in April during the opening games of the league.

“We won all the matches in Seshego. We want to thank our supporters who travelled from Polokwane to Pretoria to rally behind us. We appreciate the support.”

The Baobabs were exceptional in the round-robin stages, winning 13 out of the 14 games they played and securing a semi-final spot against the Diamonds.

It wasn’t an easy semi-final against the Northern Cape team, who showed progress in every match but were outclassed.

Congratulating the Baobabs, Sport MEC Nakedi Kekana said the country is indeed ready for the Netball World Cup, and Limpopo players are showing their enthusiasm by winning at the highest level in the country.

“We are proud of the ladies. They make our province shine. We are happy to see them play this beautiful sport the way they do.”

Rose Mamabolo, the general manager of the Limpopo Baobabs said they are happy that the hard work of the technical team and players paid off.

“For many years we have been competing in the league but finishing at the bottom. Today, we are on top. The victory is the fruit of all the hard work that has been put in by the coaches and the players. We congratulate the girls and coaches for a wonderful performance.”
