Record holder Josh says speed cubing requires focus

Joshua Marais previously set the African 3x3 handed speed cube record in 12.64 seconds and recently participated in the first official Limpopo speed cube competition at Hoërskool Pietersburg.

POLOKWANE – The African record holder for the 3×3 handed speed cube, Joshua Marais said the sport requires focus which leads to improvement.

Marais participated in the first official Limpopo speed cube competition recently which was hosted at Hoërskool Pietersburg and told the Polokwane Review that he has competed across the country.

“There is an element of pressure that comes with having broken the African record. I set my record in 12.64 seconds and in all the competitions that have followed, I have had a 15 second average, which is bad for me,” he said.

Marais added that despite the pressure, competing has taught him how to deal with it in the correct way, which has its benefits.

He added that in order to master speed cubing, cubers need to have a willingness to learn and improve themselves.

“With speed cubing, the focus is on improving yourself. Many of us that compete are not trying to get first place, we are trying to be better than we were last time. The sport is competitive but it’s a healthy kind of competition,” he explained.
