Polokwane geared to host inter-municipality games in October

Inter-Municipal Sport of South Africa (IMSSA) National Games president Alpheus Mashamaite says all systems are go for the games to be played in the City of Stars from October 9-14.

POLOKWANE – A general assembly was hosted at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Friday to discuss the city’s readiness to host this year’s games.

“We are impressed with the groundwork done and we can safely say that Polokwane Municipality is ready to host the event,” said IMSSA president and Capricorn District Municipality official Alpheus Mashamaite.

Municipal officials will participate in soccer, netball, volleyball, fishing, golf, table tennis, pool, darts, cycling, lawn tennis, athletics, T20 cricket and an aerobarathon at the six-day event.

Polokwane Municipality and IMSSA signed a memorandum of understanding in June for the hosting of the games. These games are part of the municipal employees’ wellness programme that is driven in municipalities and does not only focus on physical wellness.

In line with the IMSSA requirements, Polokwane Municipality had to provide a wholistic picture of available facilities earmarked for the various sporting codes. They also had to demonstrate to the delegates of various municipalities how the games will unfold from the opening ceremony on October 9 through the week to the closing ceremony on October 14.

According to Mashamaite, this is the first time that municipal employees will converge under one umbrella since 2019 in eThekwini, Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The games were put on hold for the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is anticipated that approximately 50 municipalities across the country will participate in the games.

“These games are fully supported by both the political and administrative leadership of the municipality and we are ready,” said Mantlako Sebaka, who spoke on behalf of the municipality.
