Polokwane to host softball championship in September

South African softball stars will head to the City of Stars in September to battle it out in the annual Softball South Africa Masters Championship.

POLOKWANE – Scheduled for September 22-24, the tourney will see eight masters teams from various softball associations, nationwide as well as neighbouring teams, battle for top softball honours.

Benny Boshomane, the deputy chairperson of the Limpopo Softball Association, said they are excited to host the masters tournament in the city for the first time.

“Each year in September, Softball South Africa’s masters division hosts an annual championship. The championship takes place during Heritage month, and thus our theme for this year’s championship is ‘Softball: A touch of our heritage’. We are happy to finally host the event and we look forward to see legendary softball players from various clubs showcase their talents.”

Masters division chairperson Derick Mahapa said one of their goals is to encourage life-long participation of masters athletes in softball.

“We are on the right track as 33 teams have entered for the 2022 championship. The number not only shows that we are an active nation, but a healthy nation too.”

Mahapa mentioned they are disappointed that the Polokwane Softball Stadium will not be completed in time to host the tournament.

He was, however, equally pleased that the Polokwane Municipality provided the Polokwane Cricket Club’s facilities for the event.

“The tournament brings economic benefits to the city and the province. We encourage local business people to support the event.”

Boshomane added they have joined the fight against gender-based violence and femicide as part of their social programme.

“Other activities are also linked to local economic development and planting long-term legacies for sport development in the host province.”
