Polokwane netball player included in SA Commonwealth Games squad

Boitumelo Mahloko (21) said winning the Telkom Netball League with the Golden Fireballs in June is motivation for her to excel at the Commonwealth Games.

POLOKWANE – Rising netball star Boitumelo Mahloko (21) has been included in the Spar Proteas Netball squad that will travel to England for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8.

“I am very excited about the call-up as I did not expect it. It will be my first time at the event and I am looking forward to play against top netball players in the world,” she told the Polokwane Review.

The final year B-Com student recently recently won the Limpopo Sports Woman of the Year award and also received a bronze accolade under the Sportswoman of the Year category at the University of Johannesburg’s sports awards this year.

Mohloko was also part of the Golden Fireballs team that beat five-time champions, the Gauteng Jaguars 35-32 to lift their maiden Telkom Netball League trophy on June 19 in Pretoria.

“I joined the team this year and I am happy to have won a gold medal with them. The feat is a huge motivation for me ahead of the Commonwealth Games,” she said.

Mahloko extended a word of gratitude to her family and her coaches at all levels for ensuring that she became a better player.

“ I could not have made it if it was not for the coaches who were there to sharpen my netball skills and ensure that I give maximum performance at every game. My family has been amazing. My mother never spoke ill of netball and has been supporting me from an early age. She never stopped and I dedicate all my achievements to her.”
