Online registration now open for annual Mayoral Marathon

This year's marathon will double as preparation and an opportunity to qualify for participation in the Comrades Marathon.

POLOKWANE – Runners are encouraged to dust off their running shoes and register for this year’s Mayoral Marathon.

Over 2 000 participants are expected to particiapte in the marathon that is set to take place on June 25 at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium and will be hosted by the Polokwane Municipality in collaboration with the Polokwane Athletics Club.

The race will cover 42.2 km, 21 km, 10 km run/walk and a 5 km fun run. Runners can register in the following categories: Junior, open, veteran and masters, grand masters and great grand masters.

The registration is already open online and those who would like to register manually can do so on June 22 and 23 from 08h00 to 18h00 at the Polokwane Athletics Club’s clubhouse.

Runners are urged to register timeously as there will be no registration on the day of the marathon.

Registered club members and anyone who is interested in taking part in any of the races are eligible to participate.

The first 1 250 runners to register online will receive a t-shirt.

Prizes worth R120 000 will be shared among the winners and all participants will be awarded medals.

The Executive Mayor, John Mpe has encouraged everyone in the community, the province at large and beyond to register and participate.

“This marathon is for the young and old and is not only for winning, but for participation and about being part of a community. Our aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle in our communities because a healthy community is an asset that cannot be quantified in monetary terms,” he said.
