POLOKWANE – Maduma said he was happy to be at the championship among 200 talented fencers from various countries who participated in the event.
He said even though the Angolan team did not fare well, he is happy with the commitment and the efforts shown by the fencers.
“Most fencers in the team are still new to the sporting code. “They have never fenced at a world championship before. However, they performed fairly well and with more championships the team will become better and stronger.”
He also hopes to lead the Angolan team to the African Championship to take place next year.
“I am hoping to be part of the team because it is through such events where one is able to build a good network with other countries to develop the sport. When I was in Dubai, most of the fencers from other countries expressed interest in coming to South Africa and I would love to host those fencers at my academy. My participation in such events also benefits the province, my academy and fencers, so it is important to maintain those relations.”
Maduma was also at the helm of the Bangladesh team at the South Asian Games in 2019.
He said that one day, he would love to coach the South African fencing team.
“I represented South Africa at the Olympics and I would love to be part of the South African technical team in the near future. I am just waiting for the opportunity to present itself and I will grab it with both hands.”
The chairperson of Limpopo Fencing Association, Renuka Ramroop, said they look forward to Maduma sharing his expertise in the association.
