Provincial softball team triumphant at nationals

The Limpopo men's softball team emerged victorious at the Gordon Monk national softball tournament at Kempton Park in Gauteng on January 29.

LIMPOPO – Dinare, as they are affectionately known in the softball circles, defeated the clubs of KwaZulu-Natal, Sedibeng and Tshwane in the group stages of the tournament.

Star players Tidima Kekana and Phomolo Phaladi were in devastating form and scored 50 runs each to ensure their team defeat Ekurhuleni in the final.

Limpopo Softball Association executive member Benny Boshomane congratulated the team on their victory and said they were happy to see the young players combine well with the senior players to ensure that they win the championship.

“We also had fringe players who were able to gain experience at the championship. The move augurs well for our succession plan because in the long run we want these young players to play a more prominent role in the team. It is at such tournaments where they will be able to gain national games experience.”

Boshomane added the team will be involved in a camp in Polokwane from February 6, to prepare for the National Softball Championship set for Cape Town from March 27 to April 23.

“We won the event last year and we hope to retain the title. We thought it would be fitting to start with the preparations now and give young players an opportunity to understand our philosophy and playing dynamics.”
