UL fencers to make USSA debut

Limpopo Fencing Association chairperson Renuka Ramroop said the University of Limpopo's fencers' participation at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) will be historical to the association.

POLOKWANE – During a recent practice session in Polokwane, Renuka said it would be the first time that a historically disadvantaged university enters USSA in the code of fencing, which is set to take place in Cape Town on December 6. “It will be momentous and this is exactly the kind of diversity and change that we want to foster in the fencing community.”

She added that with the excellent coaching from Sello Maduma of Sellu Maduma Fencing Academy and the talent and dedication of the students, she is confident that the students will do well and will make Limpopo proud.

Kakata Maponyane, director of sport and recreation at the university, said they wish the students well.

“They have been training hard and our message to them is that they must focus on the event and break the stereotype.”

Maduma said he believes the fencers will represent the entire province very well.

“I am delighted to be part of this moment in the university’s history. The fencers have worked and continue to work very hard to prepare for the competition in Cape Town. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them well. As a coach it is an absolute honour to coach these talented individuals.”
