Construction of R90m softball stadium to be completed next year

The construction of a R90m five-diamond softball stadium adjacent to the Peter Mokaba Sport Complex is expected to be completed in August next year.

POLOKWANE – Limpopo Softball Association (LSA) executive member Benny Boshomane confirmed this and alluded that the facility will play a pivotal role in growing the sport and nurturing the immense softball talent in the province.

Boshomane said the construction commenced in the first quarter of 2021 and thus far, a lot of work has been done on the ground and the two practice fields.

“They are still constructing the restrooms and the administration blocks. However, we hope that everything will be completed in August 2022.” He said the facility will grow softball in the province and give young aspiring softball players an opportunity to play at a world-class facility. The contractors, officials from Polokwane Municipality, Department of Sport, and executives from LSA, as well as Softball South Africa president Mashilo Matsetela, recently visited the construction site to appraise the progress.

Municipal sport and recreation manager Manthlako Sebaka said they are happy with the progress made at the construction site. “The pillars of the facility have been erected. There is also a demarcation of storm water pipes and column pillars. There is good progress.”

He stressed that once completed the facility will lift the softball association in the province. “Limpopo is the home of softball and the facility will definitely help grow the sport in the province.”

Matsetela said they were happy with the progress and they cannot wait to host international matches. “Everything is going well at the moment. This will be a world-class facility that will enable us to host international and national matches and we cannot wait for its completion.”

Municipal spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo said the stadium will form part of their objective of positioning Polokwane as a world-class sporting hub.
