Limpopo fencers win big at local event

Local fencers Rahul and Anokha van Manen were the big winners of the Limpopo Fencing Association's competition held in Polokwane on September 11.

POLOKWANE – Rahul clinched gold medals in the senior men’s mixed foil and epee event while Anokha achieved the feat in the senior women epee event.

Participating in the event were fencers from University of Limpopo (UL) Fencing Club, Fire Birds Fencing Club and Sello Maduma Fencing Academy.

Chairperson of Limpopo Fencing Association, Renuka Ramroop said the event also catered for junior fencers who had the opportunity to fence against each other.

“We had an excellent tournament and all the fencers had fun. Mark Howitt volunteered as the director of the competition and ensured that the competition ran smoothly. This competition served as good practice for all the senior fencers who will be participating in the national competition in KZN on September 24 and 25.”

She added that it was a proud moment for Wade Fraser, sports officer at UL and Maduma to see fencers from the university on the podium. “It was hard work to get the UL Fencing Club off the ground and to see them doing so well in a short period of time is very satisfying and rewarding. With this excellent performance we can all expect better in the future from the UL fencers.”

She added that recently qualified fencing coach Jamie Norval of Firebirds was also very happy with his club’s performance and looks forward to more provincial competitions. All clubs were happy with their fencers’ performance. Both the experienced and first-time fencers gave their best and displayed great sportsmanship.”

Ramroop, said they are proud of all the fencers who participated in the event. “I hope with this wonderful performance they will inspire others, both young and old to embrace the exciting and noble sport of fencing.”
