Limpopo selects a strong team for indigenous games

The formidable squad was selected at the provincial indigenous games held at the Polokwane cricket grounds on September 11.

POLOKWANE – The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has selected a strong team comprising of 102 athletes from various districts who will represent the province at the national indigenous games set for Durban on September 24 and 25.

The team will battle other teams from eight provinces in dibeke, jukskei, diketo, kgati, khoko, drie stokkies, ncuva, itonga and morabaraba.

Deputy director of communications at the department, Jermina Kaka said they are confident that the team will do well at the national games.

“In 2019 they ended in third position and we have faith in the selected, and we believe they will make the province proud. They have been doing well in the national events for the past years and we want to continue this form.

“The teams have been working hard in various training facilities and they are ready to make their repective provinces proud.”

She also added the main purpose of indigenous games is to revive and popularise cultural activities.

“The games are utilised to preserve heritage, promote social cohesion, cultural diversity, and nation building games impact positively on socio-economic issues such as African identity, cultural diversity, education and training.

“Furthermore, the games encourage healthy lifestyles, and discourage unwanted social behavior by keeping the youth engaged.”
