Former Mitchell House learner included in SPAR Proteas squad

Former Pietersburg English Medium Primary School and Mitchell House learner Boitumelo Mahloko has been drafted into the SPAR Proteas squad for their upcoming Margaret Beckford Sunshine Netball Series in Jamaica.

POLOKWANE – The proteas will play against Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago during the series scheduled for October 10 to 22.

Mahloko, a B.Com finance student at the University of Johannesburg, boasts numerous accolades from her netball days in secondary school and has proven herself on the netball court.

She was part of the players who were invited to the training camps of the SPAR Proteas, President’s XII and SPAR Baby Proteas recently.

Mahloko said she is blessed to be in the squad. “Being picked was particularly emotional for me because there were a very tough bunch of girls who were at the camp and anyone could have made the team. I am one of the youngest players in the squad.”

She added that she is a very vocal person on and off the court, and she will use that ability as a strength to keep the communication and confidence of the team going.

Makhloko said she aspires to be a member of the SPAR Proteas Commonwealth and 2023 Netball World Cup squad. “For me right now, it is important to keep the consistency and standard that is required to play elite netball and let that be my key to open other doors such as playing at the Commonwealth Games next year and the World Cup in 2023.”

Department of sport spokesperson Lucky Tshilimandila said Mahloko’s inclusion in the national team augurs well for the departmental sport development programmes.

“Her inclusion is a positive for us and means a lot to us, especially during this difficult period where we are unable to execute some of our programmes due to restrictions as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are proud of her selection, however, we still need more provincial netball players in the national team. We wish her the best of luck in the series.”
