Ga-Molepo star takes COSAFA Golden Boot
Victor Letsoalo was named the top goal scorer of the COSAFA Cup Council of Southern Africa Football Associations Cup.
POLOKWANE – The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup of this year will forever be cherished by Ga-Molepo born striker Victor Letsoalo.
The tournament is organised by the Cosafa and was played in South Africa this year.
Bafana Bafana and Senegal faced each other in the final at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday, July 18.
Neither team could find a winning goal in 90 minutes, or extra-time, and the match had to be decided by means of a penalty shootout.
Bafana Bafana eventually ran out 5-4 victors in the shootout, but more so, Letsoalo had a tournament to be proud of.
The former Baroka FC player bagged the golden boot award as he was named the top goal scorer of the tournament.
He scored four goals for Bafana Bafana in the tournament and also helped the national team win their fifth title of the tourney.
Letsoalo broke the previous national team record of three goals in the tournament, which was previously shared between Pollen Ndlanya, Patrick Mayo, Katlego Mphela, Teko Modise, Gift Motupa and Lebohang Maboe.
He bagged a hat-trick when Bafana Bafana thrashed Lesotho 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the tournament on July 13.
With the achievement, Letsoalo wrote his name into the history books as South Africa’s all-time leading goal scorer in the tournament, while he walked away with R20 000 and a trophy.
Piane Nkwashu, who discovered Letsoalo at a soccer tournament in Ga-Molepo five years ago, said Letsoalo has the right attitude to go far in his career.
“He has the right attitude and he is hard worker. He must continue with the good work,” Nkhwashu said.
Letsoalo said the award will motivate him to score more goals in the Premier Soccer League when the season resumes in August.
