Top goal: To play overseas

The Baroka defenders dream started when he was still in primary school

LIMPOPO – Baroka FC’s Matome Kgoetyane says his biggest dream is to play soccer overseas. The defender said that his love for soccer began at the age of 11, while playing for the Love Life Organisation.

“I have always loved playing soccer and in 2006, I was selected to represent my school and that’s where my love grew even more,” he said.

Kgoetyane did not stop there and continued to play for local teams, improving his skills in the process. He says he took every opportunity he could get.

“In 2013, Black Leopards FC, offered me an opportunity to play, but since the team was relegated to the National First Division (NFD) I only played for them for a year,” he said.

However, this never marked the end of Kgoetyane’s career as Mosesetjane All Stars in Mokopane gave him an opportunity to play a year later. In 2015, he joined Babirwa FC in Midrand and in 2016, he played trials for Baroka FC and was selected to play for the team with only eight games left in the 2015/16 season.

Kgoetyane plays right back and says he is grafting on the field to build up his profile so he can be recognised internationally.

“I am inspired by Hlompho Kekana and I want to reach his peak,” he said.

Kgoetyane advises aspiring footballers to not give up. “In order for you to survive in this sport, you have to show respect and be self-disciplined.”
