Fairway’s the way for him

Christo Stears recently represented the city and Limpopo in the AON South African Amateur Championship golf tournament.

POLOKWANE – “It is a great honour to be part of the tour and to be able to compete against some of the best young golf players in the country,” Stears said.

During the two day tournament he played well the first day but fell out the second day and just could not catch up, but he says the experience helped him see where he needs more training and practice. Stears (19) started playing golf because his father enjoys a good round.

His strong points include driving and chipping. One of his biggest dreams this year is to be able to take part in the Sunshine Tour and working towards this, he has a strict programme that he follows to make sure he is ready should the opportunity present itself. “I want to continue playing golf because I believe that it is the sport for me and besides that it is something that you can keep doing for a long time. After school I said I would give myself two years to see how good I can become as a player. My long-term goal is to win the South African Open,” he says.

His golfing hero is Louis Oosthuizen and he says he stands out because he has one of the best swings in the game with a great attitude.”I would like to see more people take up the game. Playing according to your handicap creates an equal field, and this is why I believe that the sport is something for everyone no matter your age or handicap,” Christo says.
