Capricorn Muni and PAC meet at the track

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) mayor, John Mpe said the Polokwane Marathon Comrade and Two-Ocean Qualifier has proven to be an example of how a sporting event can promote and contribute to local economic development.

POLOKWANE – He spoke at the launch of the event at the CDM’s offices. The marathon, which was formerly known as the CDM Four-In-One Race, will be hosted on Saturday, 15 February at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. “The past three years’ editions had been a huge success in enhancing and promoting social cohesion, nation building and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

PAC chairman, Pieter Pretorius and Caryn Rathnmann (PAC communication officer) at the Polokwane Marathon Comrade and Two-Ocean Qualifier briefing on Tuesday.

The idea is to prepare runners for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons and this year, CDM has reached an agreement with the Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) to host the race and partner with us. This means all planning, preparation and logistical operations such as registration will be done by the club. Our role as a partner is now reduced to helping with promotion and potential sponsorship among other roles,” he said.
He added that the reason for this is to save costs as per the directive from National Treasury to implement measures that are geared at using money only for projects that add value and do away with programmes that can still be done by others. “We have confidence that the club will make us proud and make runners happy. We commend PAC for having worked with us in the past three years and our sponsors for ensuring that this race achieved its target.”

PAC chairman, Pieter Pretorius said the club is over-joyed by the partnership and that CDM and PAC had to come to a workable solution whereby not only a marathon became the focus, but how the community, city and district could respond in times like these. “This race attracts many visitors and boosts the economy. We believe it could grow and we urge our people and businesses to get involved and grab this opportunity to run and support on the route to make the day memorable,” said Pretorius.
