Karate is a way of life for LKA’s senseis

The Limpopo Karate Academy was started in 2013 and is based at Nirvana Primary School.

POLOKWANE – According to sensei Molefi Moloto, who boasts three dan black belts, he started training karate in 1991 when still in high school.

“Karate is not just a sport but a way of life. Apart from helping a person to gain physical strength and learn self defence, karate also teaches discipline, self-control and life skills,” he said.

He says activities like tae kwondo, kung fu and aikido are a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus.

“Most young people we have in the club grow up to be calm and focused young adults who have self control. We have children as young as four who train with us and who are really well mannered and disciplined,” he added.

Shodan Koena Mokgehle is also one of the coaches at Limpopo Karate Academy and says he started training karate in 1998 while at primary school. “Karate is more than a sport to me, it’s a way of life. It has really helped me to learn life skills and values such as discipline, respect, love and self control. I was not easily influenced by friends to indulge in drug and alcohol as karate kept me busy. I was either at school learning or at karate busy training,” he explained.

Koena says that in 2003 he dreamed of sharing his skills and knowledge with others, when he joined Limpopo Karate Academy.

His hard work in the sport allowed him to grow to be a coach and today he teaches karate.

“I graduated my first black belt in 2017 and together with my senseis at the club we dream of developing karate as a sport in the province and using it to contribute positively in grooming and helping the youth lead positive lives,” he concluded.
