Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race entries still open

The Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race is set for Saturday, 8 September and will start and end at the rugby field next to the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

POLOKWANE – Presented by the Polokwane Athletic Club, runners can compete in either a 5 km, 10 km or 21,1 km race under the rules of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Athletics South Africa (ASA) so no iPods or earphones will be allowed, with offenders being disqualified.

Athletes wanting to take part can register either on Friday, 7 September from 16:30 to 19:00 or before the race on Saturday, 8 September at the rugby field. A fee of R30 for the 5 km, R60 for the 10 km and R100 for the 21,1 km as well as R30 for a temporary licence is payable.

Rules:

• All runners in the 10 km and 21,1 km have to wear their permanent ASA licence or register and display a temporary licence.

• Runners may not be dressed in any advertising material on their clothing during the race.

• All licenced athletes must wear a valid 2018 licence on the back of their vest.

• Official race numbers are to be displayed on the front and permanent or temporary licence numbers on the back of vests.

• Walkers must wear ‘W’ on back and front if competing for a prize.

• Official cut-off time for the 21,1 km is three hours.

• Winners must attend the prize giving ceremony.

The starting time for the 10 km and 21,1 km is 06:30 with the 5 km starting at 07:00. Medals will be presented to all finishers.

The race serves as a memorial to runner Hanli Steyn who frequented the running scene and lost her life and fight against cancer in 2015. Het husband, Stefan, annually participates in the race as well as many of her friends to not only remember her but also other runners who lost their lives to cancer.
