Referees become experts at Safa course

Aspiring local referees were afforded an opportunity to learn how to improve their coaching skills at a South African Football Association (Safa) referees course

POLOKWANE – The course was hosted by the Mokumong Foundation from 9 to 11 August in Ga-Molepo.

The non-profit organisation, based in Ga-Molepo, is run by Moremi Mosana, who is the Chairperson of Mokumong Foundation. He said they hosted the course with the aim of having well-equipped referees with more advanced skills and knowledge with regard to rolling out their duties on the field as well as handling their matches ethically.

The course was facilitated by Isaac Ralefatane from the Mankweng cluster.

Unfortunately none of the 20 attendees were female despite the organisation hoping to give female referees the opportunity to come and learn valuable skills.

They plan to carry out an aggressive recruitment drive in order to have more female referees taking part in such courses in future as the Safa Vision 2022 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Goal 5 seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls in the soccer industry.

Molepo United Coach, William Molamo Letsoalo, said: “It was a wonderful experience for me as a coach, especially to get more insight into the laws of the game, allowing me to play my role as referee with confidence from now forward”.

Ralefatane said from the active participation display by all participants during the course, he is expecting a high pass rate.

“Thank you to everyone who attended the course. I wish you all the luck and hope you will pass and get Safa Level 1 referee certificates,” said Mosana. He added he looks forward to the Safa D-License course from 10 to 14 December in order to capacitate Polokwane Football Association (Polfa) Molepo Streams Coaches.
