Apothen Cricket Club launch with exciting six-a-side tournament

Players under the age of 18 entered the six-a-side competition and were tasked with making teams and coming up with their own names.

POLOKWANE – The official launch of the newest cricket club in the city, the Apothen Panthers, on Saturday, 14 July showcased some great talent from local players.

Players under the age of 18 entered the six-a-side competition and were tasked with making teams and coming up with their own names. They did this with aplomb and soon the Knight Riders, Hurricanes, Gladiators and the Grizlees were ready to face off on the pitch.

The matches were played in a round-robin format and each team had the opportunity to not only showcase their various talents but also to identify and work on the areas they needed to improve on.

Knight Riders and Hurricanes faced off in the semi-finals with the match ending in a draw to force a super over which showed there was no shortage of talent and grit from the young players.

Grizlees faced the Knight Riders in the final with Grizlees being crowned the ultimate winners after a tough match.

“The turnout was very good and the day showed there is a lot of young talent in Limpopo. We look forward to making this an annual event as we want to encourage more people to become involved with the sport,” Apothen Panthers Secretary, Raeesa Kimmie, said.

Sagir Mohammed puts a few more runs on the board for his team.

Efan Meyer was awarded the bowler of the day after taking five wickets. Saba Mridha was named the best batsman after he scored 92 runs.
